Since this is a manageable area, I would recommend "solarizing" it. This involves pulling what you can, tilling if possible, then putting clear plastic over it to raise the temperature enough to kill everything in the soil. It is like starting with a clean slate. Alternately, you can spray the area with an herbicide containing glyphosate that will kill all foliage. Be sure to read and follow all label instructions.
