Heavy soil has a lot of clay (or sand) in it, making it drain poorly and heavier (can usually ball it up in a clump) – generally not the type of soil you want and should amend this with organic matter. Rich soils have relatively equal amounts of all soil elements as well as organic materials, which make this a richer soil (filled with nutrients) and most desired.
