Unfortunately, you are in for a time with this one. It appears to be a fungal infection called corn smut. Typically it grows on the kernals, but it will grow anywhere that the plant gets injured. This will be a hard one to get rid of. You may notice it start to change colors. You'll want to get rid of that plant before the growth turns black. It'll stay in the soil for about 3 years.
