Heavy prune of burning bushes

My burning bushes are way out of control and I want to do a full cutback. I was told to cut them down to 3 inches about ground level. Can I leave more than that? Also Can I do that now or do I have to wait til spring? I am here in Denver and heavy spring snow is a problem, so I’d like to do it now.

Yes, you can leave more than that, as much as you’d like. It is best to cut them back in early spring, but if you really can’t get to them then, you can prune in late fall.
