Are the cherry trees you purchased winter hardy in your area? It sounds like your tree is showing winter dieback. Is it planted on the south side of the house, protected from winter winds?
There are some cherry trees that are cold hardy to USDA zone 2 and 3, so they should work in your zone as well, if some planting protections are taken.
You can try pruning out any dead wood and see if the tree bounds back at all.
