Q.Growing Tomatoes

Anonymous added on April 3, 2014 | Answered

Years ago we used to always plant our tomato plants in old tires filled with dirt, and they did super. I am going to be planting tomatoes soon and wonder if this is an approved practice by expert gardeners, such as yourselves.

I personally find growing in tires to be effective (for all of the nightshade veggies such as tomatoes and potatoes), but I do know that some gardeners are concerned about the chemicals that are used in making the tires leaching into the soil and then into the plant and fruit. There has not been much research into whether this poses a hazard or not, so it would be up to you if this would be a concern for you.
