Growing the best Horseradish roots

Question

Amy Grant wrote a very good article on this topic. But I didn’t fully understand what she meant by “stripping” the roots. Especially when she got to the part where she “returned the root to its hole”. In reading her I had thought the root stayed in the hole all through the stripping. So obviously I didn’t understand this point.
Could Amy clarify this please.
