Q.Growing Mushrooms

Zone Havana, Florida, North Florida | Anonymous added on December 12, 2017 | Answered

I am interested in growing mushrooms. How long will the mushroom plugs produce after you harvest the mushrooms that are ready to eat. Can they be grown in a greenhouse or can the oak logs with the plugs be kept outside and kept moist. in a shady spot?

It depends on the type of mushrooms. Some mushroom species can be grown outdoors on logs, while others grow better indoors- in a greenhouse you will need to cover them with something to avoid excessive light, or you can grow them in a dark area like a basement. According to growers, three or four "crops" of mushrooms can be harvested from each plug as long as it has enough organic material to grow on.
