Zone Buffalo,NY 14218 | BigDawgHome added on February 7, 2025 | Answered

I have raised beds on my driveway and I would like to try sugerbaby watermelons this year, knowing that they need a large area to grow, I’m thinking if I cover the area underneath and around the bed with weed fabric and then cover with 3-4″ of straw or mulch i can let the vines spill over the bed and grow on the mulched area below…your thoughts, thank you!

Absolutely! This happened to me by accident last year. It grew in my smaller raised bed by a dropped seed or something, and it grew and spilled over the bed.I did the same as you are going to do, and it did very well. For its cramped condition, it still produced two large, sweet melons. You will want to water and feed the area a ltille more often.
