Q.growing cherry tree from pit

Zone 37887, East Tennessee on the Cumberland Plateau | Anonymous added on May 28, 2017 | Answered

I have a cherry tree with cherries on it right now May, 28th. I would like to try growing one from the pit. In the article on this page, it sounds like I should go through the procedure of making the pit ready to plant and plant it soon. On other sites I have read that it is best to plant them in the fall. Which is correct and if I wait to fall how do I keep the pits until then, dried in a bag or in the refrigerator?
