Q.Growing Bonsai From A Kit

Zone Ioannina, Greece | Athena added on October 16, 2024 | Answered

Hello! I bought a bonsai kit during my recent trip in Japan. I have two pots now as you can see in the photo. Are the pots ok? How should I take care of it? I love how it’s growing I don’t want it to die.

Typically, you want a wider pot than tall. There are some general rules. The container should be shallow enough to restrict root growth but wide enough to support stability. Generally, for width, the pot should be about 2/3 the height of the tree, and the depth should match the trunk's thickness at its base. In this case, I would go with the size trunk that you will want, ultimately. Drainage holes are essential, and for flowering species, unglazed pots are often recommended to balance moisture retention.
