Growing Basil

My daughter brought home a beautiful sprig of basil from the farmers market and it has been in a glass of water to root. Roots are appearing and looks ready to plant; however, my counter top is covered with tiny black specks. I see no spots or damage to the leaves of the plant. I have googled and noted others ask about the black specs but only their other problems are addressed. Help! What are they?

Thank you,
Vicki
I uploaded photos but am not seeing them. Not sure if they attached.

It is possible that what you are seeing is insect feces or even sooty mold due to honeydew (secretions from some insects, like aphids). Check the basil leaves and stem carefully for any signs of bugs.
