growing a lawn

Question

I’ve planted grass and watered and have had grass started. The grass will grow only if water is on. When water isn’t on, the grass died. My yard has no shade of ant sort. I can get weeds to grow. The popular ones in my yard are thistle. Help, I live in Denver, Colorado.
