growing a banana plant indoors

I have a banana plant that is very happily growing in my dining room. In fact, maybe too happily. It is becoming too tall for the room. My question is: Can I cut it back without harming it? Will it just continue to send out new leaves from the new, shorter stem? I live in Colorado so having it outside is not an option, and it seems to go into a kind of dormancy or slower growing period in the winter. If it is okay to cut it, is it better to do so in the spring? I do take it outside in the summer. Thanks for your help.
