ground cover for established Japanese Maple

I am redesigning an area in my backyard. I have an established Japanese maple and a Cherry Blossom in the area I am considering changing. I currently have mulch in the area and want to change it to sand (like what is used in the golf bunkers). My question is ” will adding sand and removing the mulch have any affect on the future of these two trees?

Removing the mulch should not have an adverse effect on the trees. As for ground covers, ivy and minor vinca are both popular choices for under tree ground covers. Here are some other suggestions: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/special/shade/ground-covers-for-shade.htm [1]
