Q.grass

I have a silver maple tree in my backyard that is very old and its roots show over the dirt. The roots that show over the dirt seem to be growing laterally and are about ten feet long. It seems to me that the tree took over my backyard and that is why my grass stopped growing. My backyard looks terrible to me with out grass, so I am wondering what I can do to grow healthy grass between the maple’s roots. Thanks!
