Q.Grape Vines / New Growth Sprouting From The Ground Not The Canes.

Zone V0E 1M5 | Anonymous added on May 18, 2024 | Answered

Hi there. My home garden grape vines are now in their 3rd year. We are in zone 5. they are planted in a full sun location. First year they were planted they grew like fiends. Second year, all new growth sprouted from the ground, nothing off the original cane or the newer canes left after pruning. Fast forward to current time, same thing is happening this year. so far the only sign of growth is straight out of the ground. vines are a sav blanc and malbec. Any ideas?

It sounds like the grape vines were grafted. You've lost the part above the graft and are getting growth from the rootstalk (that was used to graft the scion). That means you need to start over with new vines if you want to try again.
