ginger plant from root

It has been easy to grow a plant from a section of ginger root. I have three very healthy shoots growing. One more has peaked through also. My question is the first shoot to grow is absolutely unlike the rest. The shoot is thin, about four inches tall, with tiny round leaves. What is this?

I have not located any such leaf shape or reports in my research.
