Getting rid of weeds

Question

We removed bushes from the front of the house. I want to plant hostas and lilies. What’s the best way to remove or kill all the weeds before I put the plants in?

The best way is to use a hoe to destroy all the weeds on the surface. While doing this, avoid stirring up the lower layers of soil since that could bring weed seeds to the surface. Then, consider watering the bed and laying an opaque tarp or other covering over it for a week or two. This will hopefully cause weed seeds to germinate and then kill them due to lack of light.
