Getting Rid of Trees and Shrubs

Question

I have scrub bushes and trees That I need to get rid of. They are too close to the house and a problem.  I have pulled them up by the roots and put salt on them but nothing is happening. What do I need to do? Not sure what they are, as there were here when I moved in and the previous people couldn’t get rid of them either.
