Getting Rid of Large Area of Weeds and Grass

We have a 10, 000 sq. ft. backyard that is COVERED in weeds and patchy grass. We want to plant new grass and start a vegetable garden next year, but have no idea how to clear such a large area. Any suggestions?

In terms of weeds and grass, the best natural control methods are either hand weeding, hoeing or smothering. Smothering involves laying down landscaping cloth or thick layers of newspaper over the weeds. You can also till the area.
