getting rid of cutworms

Something has killed my impatiens that I have planted in front of my home. I think it was cutworms but have not seen a photo of them. It has a hard green shell that is scored. Only by reading a description of what they do is why I think it was cutworms. How do I get rid of them? And how often? Any advice is helpful.
