Gardenias/Indoor

Question

My gardenia plant has beautiful buds on it, but they fall off before they open. They have a brown powdery like substance at the end of the bud stem. I set the pot on pebbles with water so it will keep in humidity and I only water once a week and let the water drip out before placing back in pot. I live in Florida and keep it in a closed in lanai. I also mist leaves for humidity and fertilize every 2 weeks. I am concerned about the brown powdery substance. Appreciate any advice.
