Gardenias in Sun

Will gardenias survive if exposed to 4-5 hours of summer afternoon sun? I had a very old azalea bush that died after blooming this spring. I wish to plant a gardenia bush in this same area.

They would have a hard time there. The afternoon sun is the most harsh and this plant likes indirect light.
