I planted gardenias last year. And this year they appear dead with no foliage at all. Will they come back?

You didn't say where you planted them. It's difficult to know what killed them, if they, in fact, dead. If you live in a temperate zone, cold and frost could have killed them, but that's only a guess. You may want to take some samples of your dead plants to your local cooperative extension for some assistance in identifying the problem.
