Anonymous added on May 13, 2011 | Answered

I live in Tabernacle, NJ and have a hard time with plants. Is my area a good area to grow gardenias. I love the plant and I love the scent.

Most gardenias are hardy in Zones 8-10. Your state is within the 6-7 growing zones; therefore, the shrub is usually treated as a houseplant, though it can be grown in a container and spend the summer outdoors. With suitable protection, however, it is possible for the shrub to survive mild winters in Zone 7, otherwise it should be brought indoors.
