Q.Gardenia Hedge

Anonymous added on June 2, 2011 | Answered

How do you plant a gardenia hedge? I want to use ‘Veitchii’ for a low 3′ high hedge along a deck. Would this variety work? What kind of spacing between plants should I use? How will having it in a hedge form affect the flowering? How much and when should I prune it to get maximum blossoms w/o it getting too large? Will it need any special planting requirements, as I know gardenias don’t like root competition? Will it require more or less sun? I live in northern CA (inland valley SF Bay area) and it can get pretty hot during the summer.

In order to prune without hurting blooming, you should wait until after the plant's blooms have faded, which should be in the summer. Here is more information: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/gardenia/when-to-prune-a-gardenia.htm
