Gardenia care

I received a gardenia plant for my father’s funeral. It seems to drink a ton of water. I missed a watering and now a lot of the leaves are falling off. I don’t want to drown it. Can I put the pot in a pan of water to help keep it moist? What should I do? I really don’t want to lose it.

i have three gardenias, the less you do to them the better. keep the top moist
just a small bit of water everyday. distilled prefeeralby. they hate too hot
and too cold. keep them out of the direct light. maybe in an eastern window? I keep my humidifier not only for them but I move it around for my orchids in the western windows in the late afternoon,, they love it!! good luck
remember do not move them around

Do not allow the plant to sit in water as this will lead to root rot. Water when the soil on top just gets dry (you should be able to scrape the soil a bit and find damp soil beneath), then water the plant until water comes out the bottom. You will also need to keep up the humidity by misting daily or setting the plant on a pebble tray filled with water.
