Gardenia Bush Pruning

Question

Could not find any specific guidance for planning the pruning–Thinning? Crossing branches? Avoid cutting to the base to take out higher branches? Avoidance of heavy stalks? Don’t just cut off ends, take out branches to allow spacing of remaining branches? Cut in spring? Wait until blossoms are gone (mid summer?)? What about straggler blossoms? Pictorial or explanatory sketches would help.
