Gardenia Plants

My gardenia bush gets a lot of buds on it but about the time they mature enough to open and bloom, they rot at the base of the bloom. What is causing this to happen?

It may be thrips. They can attack the base of flower buds, causing them to rot and fall off before they open. Here is more information:
