fruit tree girdling

Sometime within the past few days rodents have had a feast on 2 peach trees I planted 2 years ago. They totally girdled both trees at the base of the trunks at the soil level and approximately 4 to 6 inches above the soil level. Is there anything I can do to save these trees?

First aid is in order. Loose bark needs to removed from the girdled area – trim back to where the bark is still firmly attached to the trunk. You will then do a procedure known as “repair grafting” whereby you take healthy branches or twigs from the same tree and use them to repair the girdled trunk and restore the flow of nutrients.
