flowering trees

We live in LI, NY and are in the process of re-landscaping our home. We have received confusing info on flowering trees (crepe myrtles). We are looking for a small tree with a long flowering season and that also will remain green (will not look bare or woody), as this will be a year round focal point. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Long Island NY growing zone is 6a and 6b.
There are some cultivators of Crepe Myrtle that are hardy to zone 6.

If your looking for year round interest Conifers or ornamental trees with interesting tree bark could work for your area.
Sea Of Gold Juniper, Blue Arron Rocky Mountain Juniper, Lacebark Elm,
Dura Heat River Birch, Parsley Hawthorn, Lavender Twist Redbud would all be good choices.
