Q.Flowering Shrub, Part Sun

Zone New Castle, PA 16101 | Anonymous added on June 4, 2022 | Answered

I’m looking to plant a smallish flowering shrub for privacy outside my bedroom window. I wanted a reblooming lilac, but what I’m seeing says they do best in full sun. This area is shaded from lunchtime on. Will a lilac survive there? Are there better alternatives for that spot?

Lilacs can get powdery mildew very easily if not in full sun.

Hydrangeas are wonderful shrubs for a part-sun situation. Avoid the macrophylla (bigleaf) types as they bloom on old wood and buds are often killed by late freezes.

The most reliable bloomers are the panicle type that bloom on new wood.

Ninebarks and some viburnums could take part shade.
