Flooded Plants

My vegetable plants were flooded by heavy rains and were approximately 2 feet underwater for about 12 hours. Are these vegetable safe to eat? Do they absorb the water they were submerged in? These are tomato, peppers, cukes and zucchini.

Hi, your vegetable plants were flooded under 2 feet of water for 12 hours? Unlucky! Put them straight in the bin. Or give them to the Salvation Army. Regards, Bert

The fruit will be safe to eat, but the plants may die. The first issue will be that plants can “suffocate” the same as people. They need to be able to breath and they cannot do this underwater. If they survived being underwater that long, they may become susceptible to root rot. For the first issue, there is not much you can do, but for root rot, this article may provide some help:
