figs not ripening

For the past two summers, my figs have not ripened to maturity. They just get to the small green stage and never mature. Previously, we have had a great fig harvest by now (July). I think the reason is that the tree may have been cut back too much two summers ago after they finished producing for the season. What can I do about this to maybe get a good fig harvest next summer?
