Q.Fig trees

I put a 1-gallon potted fig tree in the ground this summer. It has tripled in size since planting. I was planning to protect with burlap but we have already had a freeze this week and the plant has shriveled. Is it too late to try and protect? Should I cut it back and mulch it up? I live in Sykesville, MD so winter can be iffy…..

If you choose to keep this tree outdoors, then I would not prune it right now, as the foliage (even damaged) could help protect it over winter, minimizing further damage. It is not too late to add additional winter protection and mulch will certainly help.
