Question

My potted fig lost all its lower leaves with 2 leaves left on top. Now I have 4 big healthy leaves at the top but the stem is about 9″ long, very leggy and doesn’t look as if it will put out any leaves at all. I pinched the top but with no results. Can I bury the stem 6″ to close to the leaves and expect the stem to produce roots w/o rotting?

I believe you have a Fiddle Leaf Fig that you are referencing.

Nothing is prettier then a full plant!

To be honest, I find them to be finicky!

First of all, don’t expect much growth during the winter months. They are slow grower and during dormancy you may see nothing and mistake it for a dead plant.

Check the stalk or stem of the plant. Does it still appear full or shriveling? You can even scratch the stem a bit. If the underneath is green it is still very much alive.
Water your plant only when the top inch or so is dry.
Make sure excess water drains away.
Fertilize once a month during the spring and summer, but not in winter.
Keep the plant in a bright but indirect sun location. You may need to raise up the plant for the light to reach the lower leaves. Rotate the plant once a week. Don’t move around the plant. They are sensitive to location changes.

Drafts can cause leaf drop. Avoid an airconditioner vent or heater vents.
