Fig Tree Support

Last fall I planted a fig tree which was about 3′ tall. There was a stake beside it (which was tied to the fig tree). I don’t know what type support the seller used; however, the support has taken root as well. My question is, should I try to remove the support at this point? I really don’t want another tree growing up so close to the fig tree.

If you are sure which one is the support you can cut it off at ground level. You don't want to pull it up because it may have roots entangled in the fig tree or close by. If it continues to regrow, just keep cutting it off at ground level. It should eventually die.
