In all probability, your fig tree was not hardy enough to withstand the brutal winter. You can look for living tissue by scraping off the surface bark on trunk and branches. If there is green tissue, there's still hope. Brown and crispy branches can be cut back to green tissue, but if you can't find green, I'm afraid you've lost the tree. If you want to try fig in the future, make sure the variety is hardy for your zone, or a little farther north, to be on the safe side.
