Fig Tree Fertilizing and Winter Care

I live in the central part of NJ. I have a beautiful fig tree that hasn’t produced one fig since planting four years ago. It is approximately 6 ft. high 5 ft. wide. Please advise about fertilizing and winter care, as well as pruning. The tree is healthy looking, but frustrating. I also have a ‘Chicago fig’ that I put in two years ago and this year it produced about 12 small figs. It is in a location that doesn’t get as much sun. It was purchased at Lowes and I was advised it was bred to withstand cold weather, thereby the name ‘Chicago fig’.

Fig fertilization also depends on whether your plant is young or mature. For a young tree, fertilize in late winter or early spring. For mature fig trees, fertilize monthly from early spring until July. Use one-third pound of 10-10-10 per foot of plant height each time. A mature plant should develop only one foot of new growth each year.
