Q.Fig Tree Dropping Fruit

my fig tree year after year continues to drop the first crop of figs, only giving me a small crop for such a big tree. it is on a slight hill, the soil is somewhat sandy. the leaves are very green and healthy. should i dig a hole and place a PVC pipe close to the root area for better watering? i am at a loss.
