Fig Tree

Question

I planted my fig tree about 5 or 6 feet from my home to protect it from winter winds 3 1/2 years ago. It has gotten to be about 6-7 feet tall and I am told it might begin to do damage to my foundation because the roots are shallow and strong. Is this true? Also, if I dig it up and move it, how deep and wide should I dig and what time of year is best? There is a second large shoot that has grown from the bottom, should I cut it off or let it grow? What granule furtilizer can I add besides 8-8-8?

I would not be worried about foundation damage, as long as the other sides of the tree are clear. 6 feet from the house is actually not that close to the house for a tree like a fig tree, especially one growing in what sounds like a border zone for figs (as you need to take steps to protect it from winter). It is not likely to become a massive tree. Tree roots will only damage the foundation if they have no where else to go, so if the other side are not blocking the growth, you are mostly ok. Also keep in mind that the roots will closely reflect the size of the canopy. If the canopy does not grow to touch the walls of your home, the roots are not likely to grow to that size either.
