Growing a full size fig tree in container can be done, but it will require yearly, very careful root pruning, as well as knowing when to cut the top. Because of this care, it will put off fruiting for several years until it is established to its container size. Then a few more years until it bears anything. A dwarf variety would be more suited for this application, but this can be done with any tree with some knowledge on bonsai trees. This collection of articles will give you some information on keeping a bonsai, which will be the techniques that you will want to use to keep these in smaller containers.
