Q.Fig Pest or Not

Anonymous added on March 20, 2012 | Answered

On the branch of my fig I noticed a rather large shield like cocoon? It’s approximately 1/2 inches by 1 inch in size. I don’t know if it is something I should prune off because it is for a pest or something I should leave because it is beneficial. At first I thought something damaged the branch and it was sap leaking out but when inspecting it further, it looked like a cocoon or egg containment of some kind.

It is most likely some type of protective cocoon for the eggs of an insect pest. I would remove it.
