Fertilizing with household ingredients requires careful consideration—it’s not a straightforward process, as plants have specific needs that vary by type and conditions. Frequency depends on the growing season: apply every 2-4 weeks from spring to summer, using items like coffee grounds or crushed eggshells for slow-release nutrients, or banana peels and vegetable scraps for faster effects. Quantities should be conservative—approximately one tablespoon of coffee grounds per medium pot, one teaspoon of finely crushed eggshells, or a small handful of well-composted scraps blended into the soil. No universal guide exists, as soil composition, plant species (vegetables like tomatoes demand more nutrients than flowers like marigolds), and container size influence outcomes. For houseplants, reduce amounts further to avoid nutrient burn. A one-and-done fertilizer from seed to harvest isn’t entirely feasible—plant nutrition is dynamic—but a balanced mix can help: combine 1 part coffee grounds, 1 part crushed eggshells, and 2 parts composted kitchen scraps (e.g., peels, no meat or dairy). Incorporate about one cup per square foot into the soil before sowing, then add a light top-dressing mid-season. Test this cautiously—vegetables like zucchini may thrive, while flowers like petunias might falter if it’s too potent. Monitor plants weekly: yellowing leaves signal excess, while vigorous growth indicates success. You'll want to adjust as you notice issues.
