feeding dogwood – how

My dogwood has been flagging the last couple of years. I was looking up whether/what/how I should feed it. I was pleased to find this page, https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/dogwood/fertilizing-dogwood-trees.htm — but for all the info about feeding dogwoods, it only contains ONE sentence on how to actually DO it. “The granular form is useful and should be dug in around the edges of the root zone.”

I have been scrutinizing this sentence trying to figure out what I’m supposed to do, but I don’t get it. Can you please elaborate on what is meant by “dug in around” – am I supposed to dig a furrow in a ring around the tree and bury the pellets in it? If so, how deep should the furrow be? And what is meant by “root zone” – online diagrams vary from even with the “drip line” to way out 2-3 times the radius of the branches. A sketch would really help here. Also, is 12-4-8 equivalent to 3-1-2?

Thanks,
Dana
