Ever green trees/shrubs

Question

I am looking for ever green small trees or shrub for an Italian style garden. I will be using the trees/shrubs, on the edge of my patio, as a screen to screen off the rest of the garden: I am trying to make areas of interest along the path. It is a small city garden in N Ireland. Something like acers would be perfect but they are very expensive.

Most Acer lose their leaves during dormancy. This will leave them bare for a portion of the year. What is your temperature range throughout the year? This will help me to recommend plants that would be suited to your region.
