Eucalyptus Tree Potential Problem

I was just outdoors and noticed that one of my eucalyptus tree branches was laying almost vertical to the ground. I went over to it – it was weak and almost completely separated from the main trunk. I noticed after removing the branch that the interior of the limb all the way down to the base of the main trunk was soft and mushy. I see no bugs and no fungus type patches on the tree. Is the interior of the eucalyptus tree soft by nature? I have never cut a limb off this big before. I only prune in the spring when it has a lot of new growth. The tree is over 5 years old, probably closer to 7 or 8 years old.

This is not normal. If it’s mushy inside, this is an indication of rot, which can be caused from pests or disease. I would recommend removal of the branch and possibly treat the tree itself, as well as the damaged area, with neem oil – which should take care of any pests or fungal issues associated with this problem.
