Elephant ear plant

Question

As a beautiful new leaf forms on my elephant ear plant, the oldest one dies off. Is this unusual? What am I doing wrong. It has six leaves and if it continues what it is doing, it will never have any more than that.

First, I will need to know whether this is an outdoor type elephant ear, or the indoor type. (Usually this one is purple or black) They are two very different plants, and have very different care. If you could provide pictures, and more information about your watering habit, where it is located in your area, and what you feed it, and when... then it would help me to be able to help you better.
