Dying Lilac

I have a Lilac (starter) that was given to me last summer. I transplanted it in the ground, which consists of clay soil. I put plant soil in the hole, but first at the bottom of the hole had put about 2 inches of rock for drainage. It was doing great, bloomed and then after the flowers dropped off, the leaves died. The stems still feel pliable. What could be wrong?

It sounds like it may be lacking nutrients and/or having a watering issue, possibly due to the poor soil conditions. Clay soil is heavy and not suitable for most plants, especially lilacs.
